Can Elliptical Machines Help Strengthen Your Bones?

Maintaining strong, healthy bones is incredibly important as we age. By keeping our bones strong we can lower our risk of getting osteoporosis as we get older. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone that increases the risk of bone fractures.

As we get older it can take longer to heal so recovering from a fracture can be much more difficult. But by exercising regularly we can cut down our risks of breaking bones in a couple of ways. By keeping your muscles strong and flexible you should be able to stand and walk with more stability, lowering your chances of taking a fall.

But the better way of reducing your risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures is by getting into a routine of doing weight-bearing exercises when you are younger, and continuing that routine into your golden years. You can help maintain your current bone mass by doing this type of exercise at least three times a week.

Weight-bearing exercises create an environment of muscle pulling on bone. This helps your body build stronger, denser bones. By building strong bones and maintaining your bone mass your bones should be in good shape as you age.

There are a variety of exercises or routines that can help with this, but one that I prefer includes the elliptical machine. Because an elliptical has so many other benefits besides providing a good, weight-bearing workout it can be a great choice for a wide range of people.

Elliptical machines also provide a great cardiovascular workout. Because you can workout your upper and lower body at the same time you can really get your heart rate up quickly. Most come with a variety of different workout programs so they are typically good for the beginner or a serious athlete.

They work well for older people or those with injuries because they don’t strain the joints the way some exercises or exercise machines can. But even though they are low-impact they provide a well-rounded workout.
